ALLENTOWN, PA
History of Allentown, PA
Allentown, PA the county seat of Lehigh County, is Situated 50 Kilometers north-northwest of Philadelphia on the Lehigh River. It’s connected on the east with Bethlehem and combined with Bethlehem and Easton constitutes a metropolitan region. Allentown is in a place of limestone deposits, from which developed the cement industry where the city is understood. The surrounding agricultural area a part of the Pennsylvania Dutch area.
The land on which Allentown later acquired was acquired from Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, the creator of Pennsylvania. In 1745, it was bought by William Allen, a Philadelphia merchant. Allen built a private lodge on the website but the city itself did not start to grow until the 1760’s. Initially it was called Northampton, as was the county about it. In 1770, William Allen’s son James Allen constructed Trout Hall, which is now a museum.
In 1838, the title was changed to Allentown in honor of its creator. Allentown, PA Seminary opened its doors in 1848, changing its title to Muhlenberg College in 1867.
Liberty Bell Museum
In 1962, the members of Zion’s church and the wider community came together to create a shrine testifying to our distinctive function, protecting America’s most sacred symbol of freedom. The area underneath the church has been excavated, exposing the initial base (which is pictured above in the header of the web site.)
Through time, elementary school teachers improved their neighborhood history program with visits to the Liberty Bell Shrine. Scout troops visit to meet history badge requirements. Indeed, hundreds of thousands from the Lehigh Valley and around the world have seen and heard the story of this journey of the bells from Philadelphia to Allentown.
Lately, our educational purpose and mission have expanded, and the State Department of Education has given us an Education Improvement Organization. Now called the Liberty Bell Museum, this hidden jewel in center city Allentown has changing exhibits, lecture series, historic re-enactments and events in partnership with Zion’s Church, a 1/2 scale replica (child-sized) Conestoga wagon, in addition to that holiday favorite, Pip the Mouse.
