ANNUAL EVENTS IN BETHLEHEM PA
Welcome to Bethlehem, PA, also known as Christmas City, USA. Bethlehem was founded over 250 years ago in 1741 when a religious group, members of the Moravian Church, purchased land where the Monocacy Creek flows into the Lehigh River. Bethlehem is sometimes called the “City of Festivals” thanks to more than 10 major festivals and 150 smaller festivals or community cultural events offered each year. From Musikfest to Christmas City Village,
On December 7, 1937, at a grand ceremony during the Great Depression, Mrs. Marion Brown Grace pulled a large switch to turn on the new Christmas street lights and a large wooden star. Mrs. Grace was the daughter of former South Bethlehem burgess, Charles F. Brown, and wife of Eugene Grace, President of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Hundreds of citizens attended the ceremony and thousands more listened to the speeches and musical performances on the radio. This was the first year the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce adopted the nickname “Christmas City, USA”. There is a festival for everyone in Bethlehem PA.
